Is Transient Elastography a Valid Screening Method for Esophageal Varices?

چکیده
Gastroesophageal varices are a common complication of cirrhosis and are present in approximately 50% of patients with cirrhosis.[1] Acute gastroesophageal variceal hemorrhage is a severe complication of cirrhosis or portal hypertension associated with high mortality.[1‐3] Although mortality of gastroesophageal variceal hemorrhage has decreased in the past three decades, it remains the most common lethal complication of cirrhosis[1] with an overall mortality of approximately 15–20% per episode.[3]

Non-invasive detection of liver fibrosis with transient elastography and serum markers
1. Currently available methods for the non invasive assessment of liver fibrosis include transient elastography and serum markers. 2. Two aims are clinically relevant: 1) detection of significant fibrosis (indication for antiviral treatment in chronic viral hepatitis); 2) detection of cirrhosis (indication for screening of oesophageal varices and hepatocellular carcinoma). 3. Transient elastogr...
متن کاملA Beginning or the End? A Meta-analysis to Assess the Diagnostic Accuracy of Transient Elastography for the Prediction of Esophageal Varices
BACKGROUND/AIMS To assess the accuracy of transient elastography (TE) in the prediction of esophageal varices (EV). MATERIALS AND METHODS The literature search was conducted by using PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and CENTRAL on The Cochrane Library without time or language restrictions. Terms used were "FibroScan," "transient elastography," "stiffness," and "esophageal varices." The pooled ...
متن کاملEvaluation of large esophageal varices in cirrhotic patients by transient elastography: a meta-analysis.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Transient elastography (TE) has been shown to be a valuable tool for the prediction of large esophageal varices. However, the conclusions have not been always consistent throughout the different studies. Therefore, we performed a further meta-analysis in order to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of transient elastography for the prediction of large esophageal varices. M...

Transient elastography: a meta-analysis of diagnostic accuracy in evaluation of portal hypertension in chronic liver disease.
OBJECTIVES Transient elastography (TE), as a non-invasive method, has been studied for evaluation of portal hypertension in patients with chronic liver diseases (CLD) with variable results. We studied the performance of TE for detection of significant portal hypertension, oesophageal varices and large oesophageal varices using meta-analysis. METHODS PubMed, the Cochrane Library, EMBASE and IS...
